Being the child of an obstetrician, I spent my high school summers in my father’s office. My duties included checking urine samples for protein, taking blood pressures and weight readings, and listening to foetal hearts with ultrasound. In 1990 after conceiving and birthing my first child (with a breech presentation) at home, my interest in pregnancy and the birth process grew. In 1996, I expanded my training as a massage therapist by becoming certified in Bodywork for the Childbearing year. My practice in Austin, Texas focussed mainly on pregnancy massage. My interest in women’s health expanded in 2001 during my first year as a student at the New Zealand School of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. During a lecture given by Debra Betts, I was introduced to the Chinese Medical concept that women’s periods can be pain free and without premenstrual tension. I booked myself into the student clinic and experienced that my breast lumps and my premenstrual tension disappeared after receiving acupuncture and taking Chinese patent herbs. Chinese Medicine is a holistic practice and I have become increasingly aware that at all the crossroads of women’s health – menstruation, conception, pregnancy, birth & menopause – treatment is useful. During my clinical acupuncture training, I actively sought to treat women who were pregnant or wanting to use acupuncture to conceive. I opened my practice in Kapiti in 2006. I enjoy working with women who want to use acupuncture and herbs to conceive naturally and I support positive birth outcomes by offering pre-birth acupuncture.
