Acupuncture is becoming increasingly valued in our society as a safe, effective and drug free option for treating ailments of pregnancy and for preparing the mother emotionally and physically for birth.  It is also regarded as a valuable form of preventative care enhancing well-being and promoting optimum health for the mother and baby.

Situations and conditions where acupuncture is helpful include:

Pre-birth treatment
Preparation for labour, or Pre-birth treatments are commenced at 37 weeks are given weekly for approximately four treatments. Treatments are based on the individual woman’s requirements and points are selected to address her emotional, and physical well-being, as well as those to ripen the cervix, encourage optimum positioning of the baby, and to build stamina and energy for the mother. Breech babies are ideally treated between 34 - 36 weeks gestation with the use of  a moxa stick, (a cigar-like stick made of medicinal mugwort herb) and held over a specific place to stimulate the acupuncture point. The woman continues the treatment at home for approximately 10 days. This technique is also valuable for encouraging the baby to turn from a posterior position.
